The photosensor has a light emitting diode, and a photodiode providing the light receiving component, disposed in prescribed positions relatively close and facing each other. The components are adjustable to suit the subject to which they are applied which may for example be the ear lobe of the patient. The drive circuit or oscillator emits a pulsed supply to the LED causing it to wink rapidly at a frequency for higher than that of the patient's pulse, for example, at a frequency of one KHZ. The photodiode output signal is at the high frequency but modulated at the frequency of the patient's pulse.
