A method for the preparation of dextran sulfate and salts thereof which comprises first forming a complex between sulfur trioxide and formamide at a controlled temperature between 15 DEG -40 DEG C. in the presence of dry nitrogen gas and thereafter reacting said complex with dextran at a controlled temperature between 25 DEG -55 DEG C.
