The equipment includes an hydrualic press (10) having an upright cylinder (12) with a piston (14) reciprocating in the cylinder, and defining two fluid chambers (16,18). A ram (20) projects from the piston to act on a mixture of firebrick materials comprising fine particles in a mould. A servovalve (22) allows the fluid chambers (16,18) to be placed alternately in communication with a second hydraulic pump (24) and fluid reservoir (26). The valve is a four- way, three-position, closed-centre valve capable of infinite positioning. A reference pressure signal is constantly compared with the actual pressure exerted by the press., and the servovalve is actuated accordingly to make the pressure difference zero.
