1356569 Carbon fibres and films COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 7 Dec 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 60769/70 Heading C1A Articles consisting of carbon fibres, filaments, and films are made by spinning or extruding a non-polymeric hydrocarbon material consisting of mixtures of highly aromatic non-polymeric organic compounds and compositions containing this material, to form the desired article, reacting the article with an aqueous solution of bromine to stabilize it during heat treatment and carbonizing the treated article. The heat treatment is preferably carried out in the presence of oxygen at temperatures up to 230‹ C. and the carbonization at temperatures up to 1000‹ C. The non-polymeric hydrocarbon material may be a solution or extract of coal, coal pitch, tar, bitumen, asphalt, or a petroleum pitch. The non-polymeric material may be mixed with minor amounts of synthetic polymers, natural or synthetic rubber, long chain fatty acids, and alcohols, amines, and crosslinked aromatic compounds. |
