PURPOSE:To set the orienting direction of liquid crystal to a desired direction by selecting the cooling speed of a liquid crystal orienting film when cooling the liquid crystal orienting film from an isotropic phase to a smetic A phase. CONSTITUTION:The atmosphere in a processing chamber 3 is adjusted properly by a vacuum discharge system, a gas flow rate control valve 9, etc. Further, a substrate 1 where a high polymer film 10 of polyamide, etc., is formed is mounted on a support base 1. Further, the speed of the cooling of the liquid crystal from the isotropic phase to the smetic A phase is made different to select a desired direction as the orienting direction of molecules. Namely, the orienting direction of the liquid crystal is different between rapid cooling and gradual cooling. Consequently, the liquid crystal in the desired orienting direction is obtained. |
