摘要 PURPOSE:To realize high-speed response and bistable operations with a liquid crystal element having a large area by forming fine grooves in one direction on the surface of a base plate by using a burnishing tool before or after forming electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Fine grooves are formed on a base plate 2 in such a way that the base plate 2 is moved while a tool 1 is pressed against the base plate 2 and a plastic deformation is given to the base plate 2 (burnishing method). Since the shapes of the grooves formed on the base plate 2 can be changed easily depending upon the shape and cutting quantity of the blade of the tool 1, grooves having a required shape can be formed easily. Moreover, when the grooves are formed at regular intervals, the grooves can be formed on the entire surface of the base plate at equal pitches. Furthermore, a liquid crystal element can be manufactured in such a way that fine grooves are formed on electrodes after the electrodes are formed on the base plate 2 made of glass, etc., and the base plate 2 is bonded to another base plate 2 with a certain gap between them, and then, ferroelectric liquid crystal is injected into the gap. Therefore, a liquid crystal element which is excellent in optical responding characteristic and large-area response can be obtained easily.
