CONSTITUTION:When a printing paper 16 is inserted and a change in a signal from a paper absent status to a paper-present status is detected by a CPU, the CPU outputs a signal for driving a stepping motor 19 for adjusting a platen gap, and the motor 19 is driven to retract a carriage to a position corresponding to a maximum platen gap. The position corresponding to the maximum platen gap is set as a position at which a reference position detecting member 23 fixed on a gear 22 for adjusting the platen gap 22 intercepts light used in a photo-sensor 24 comprising a light emitting element and a light-receiving element. In this case, an eccentric guide shaft 7 rotatably supported by left and right grames 5, 6 is rotated by forward or reverse rotation of the motor 19, and the carriage is moved toward the front side or the rear side under the function of the eccentricity of the shaft 7.
