PURPOSE: To lower the height of a suction section and improve performance by making the horizontal cross section of the upper portion of a positive electrode chamber larger than that of the lower portion, and filling the lower portion with a positive electrode alkaline metal in the completely discharged state of a battery. CONSTITUTION: A separator tube 24 made ofβ-alumina is arranged in a case 18, and a positive electrode chamber is formed between the separator tube 24 and the case 18. An electrolyte 14 is filled between a negative electrode 16 made of an electrolyte-permeable matrix and the separator tube 24. The case 18 is constricted at a position 36, the upper portion 40 has a horizontal cross section larger than that of the lower portion 38, and a positive electrode metal made of fused sodium 12 is sealed to fill the lower portion 38 in the completely discharged state. The level of the upper portion of the fused sodium 12 is increased or decreased according to a charge or a discharge, however suction can be set to a relatively low height because the cross sectional area of the upper portion 40 is large. |
