The process for prepg. the compds. of formula (I) comprises (i) sulfonating phenylphosphinate or its ester with alk. (earth) salts for 6hr at 50-200 deg.C esp. 90-120 deg.C and (ii) addn. reacting with formaldehyde for 2hr at 50-200 deg.C esp 80-160 deg.C. In the formula, M=alk. (earth) salt of sulfonate; m=1-2 integer; R1 and R2=H or hydroxy ethyl independently.
