The vehicle washing or drying device has a conveyor belt which drags the vehicle (1) through the device and a flexible supporting element (4) which is guided in a horizontal plane above the movement path of the vehicle by means of several deflection wheels (5, 6) and has a number of narrow strips (10) made of absorbent material which are connected thereto and hang down vertically. Two strands (4a, 4b) of the supporting element (4) run at an angle ( alpha ) obliquely with respect to the direction (B) of movement of the vehicle. The strand (4a) facing the front of the vehicle is driven in a direction which has a speed component (K1) which is directed counter to the direction (B) of movement of the vehicle. The strand, facing the rear (1b) of the vehicle, of the supporting element (4) is inclined at such an angle ( alpha ) with respect to the direction (B) of movement of the vehicle that when it moves it has a speed component (K2) which is directed in the direction (B) of movement of the vehicle. This angle ( alpha ) and the speed (G) of the supporting element (4) are selected such that the speed component (K2), directed in the direction (B) of movement of the vehicle, of the strand (4b) facing the rear (1b) of the vehicle is greater than the speed (V) of the conveyor belt.
