Method and device for manufacturing an insulated multipane unit

Insulating pane unit 10 made of a pair of glass panes 12, 14, one of which can have an electrically conductive coating 22. The two panes 12, 14 are arranged at a spacing from one another and the edge regions are heated to a temperature at which the edges bend and fuse on contact with one another so that side walls 16 are created. The glass panes 12, 14 are held at a spacing by blowing air into the interspace 18 through a bore 20 in one of the panes 12 and thus the edges are hardened also. Subsequently, the entire units consisting of the panes 12, 14 which are fused together are cooled and hardened in a stress-free manner. The interspace 18 between the panes 12, 14 is filled with an insulating gas and the bores 20 are sealed in a tight manner. <IMAGE>
