PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of a speed change shock by changing over a speed change control solenoid when the rotational ratio of a gear mechanism has changed up to a prescribed condition, and further by stopping the speed change when the changeover of the solenoid is not carried out within a prescribed time. CONSTITUTION:In the case of speed change in a power-off condition that is detected by a detecting means, a solenoid changeover means carries out the changeover of the solenoid when the rotational ratio of a speed change gear calculated by a rotational ratio calculating means via the outputs from both an input and an output rotating speed detecting means has changed up to a prescribed value which has been previously set for each speed change on the basis of, for example, the opening of a throttle. In addition, when the choke of an engine is operated and the rotating speed of the engine is high, since there is the possibility that the rotational ratio can not be decreased up to a prescribed value, and if this condition continues for a prescribe time, the speed change is forcibly stopped by a time measuring means and a speed change stopping means. Thus, even in the case of jump or speed change without stepping-in on an acceleration pedal or the like, an appropriate speed change timing can be obtained, and also the occurrence of an excessive speed change shock can be prevented.
