So that manhole covers of different size and in some cases of considerable weight can be lifted in a simple manner and moved away from the manhole, an apparatus with two stands, one travel mechanism each and one hydraulic lifting device each is proposed, the two stands being adjustably and releasably connectible to one another at a distance from one another. Tension members are provided between the hydraulic lifting devices and the manhole cover to be moved.
