In the two-dimensional electrophoretic separation into constituents of an analytical sample, the gel body containing the isoelectrically focused components had to be taken out of a first separation apparatus and, for the purpose of further separation into constituents in the "second dimension", positioned in another separation apparatus in which a further splitting was carried out in a direction perpendicular to the separation direction of the said first apparatus, so that the analytical result was obtained as a planar pattern fixed in a gel layer. However, the transfer of the said first gel layer between the two separation apparatus is associated with a series of disadvantages. In contrast, in the apparatus of the invention the separation processes of both dimensions are carried out in a single apparatus, so that the transfer of the said first gel layer (14') between two apparatus is omitted. For this purpose, three gel layers (14, 14', 14'') are held between two glass plates (1), with the middle gel layer (14') serving the separation process of the first dimension and a composite body of all three gel layers serving the separation process of the second dimension. <IMAGE>
