The appts. has a ROM (20) storing B mode operation, connected via a data selector (23) to transmission (5) and reception (9) beam formers connected via a transceiver circuit (7) to a vibrator unit (8). The reception beam former (5) also connects to B mode (10) and Doppler mode (11) circuits leading to a display. A RAM (22) connects to the data selector (23), to the B mode ROM (20) and to a microprocessor (21) which serves to modify the B mode data when Doppler mode operation is required. Specification of B mode and/or Dopperler mode is input from a keyboard. Alternatively, vibratory array apertures are varied in response to keyboard input.
