Turf having a substrate thickness of 10-12 mm is produced by (a) depositing and compacting a first layer of soil on a surface, (b) depositing a flexible layer of matrix material (e.g. sacking or open-pored foam) on the first soil layer, (c) depositing grass seeds on the flexible layer, (d) depositing and compacting a second substantially uniform layer of soil on the seeds, (e) allowing germination of the seeds for 5-6 days in the absence of light, and (f) exposing to light for 5-8 weeks. The soil may be John Innes No. 2 seed compost.
