A lactone polymer (I) with functional gps. at the chain ends is prepd. by reacting the lactone with a polymerisation initiator of formula Alk(d-p)-M-(O-R(Y)n-Xm)p, in an organic solvent, to obtain an intermediate (II) by opening the ring at the acyl-O bond of the lactone, and either (i) acid hydrolysis of (II) to give (I), or (ii) coupling of (II) to form (I) with doubled mol. wt., or (iii) reaction of (II) with a functional reactant to obtain (I). M = Al, Zn, Sn, Cd, Ge, Si or Ti; Alk = 1-18C (substd.), (un)branched alkyl; =-R(Y)nXm = an alcoholate function; d = valency of M; p is not greater than d, and is the number of alcoholate gps. linked to M; if n = 0 and m = 1-4, R = organic gp., (partly) hydrocarbon, carrying at least 1 monovalent (non)protonic gp. X; if m = 0 and n = 1-10, R = organic gp., partly hydrocarbon, carrying at least 1 bivalent functional gp. Y; if m + n = 1-14, R = organic gp., partly hydrocarbon, carrying at least 1 monovalent (non)protonic functional gp. X and at least 1 bivalent functional gp. Y.
