This device for detecting by eddy currents surface defects on a long product with a circular cross-section comprises an active encircling coil 4, located around the product 1 in relative motion, and an apparatus for observing the impedance of the coil; the coil 4 is mounted off-centred on support and drive means 8, 7, 9, 10, 13 which are arranged so as to allow circular displacement of the centre of the coil 4 around the axis of the moving product 1. <IMAGE>
