PURPOSE:To improve the starting property of an engine by providing a valve for opening/closing the delivery oil passage of an oil pump and a drain oil passage and providing a means for outputting a signal to operate the valve in the opening direction when engine speed at the time of cranking is below a certain value. CONSTITUTION:A solenoid valve 42 is operated by ON/OFF signals inputted from an electronic control device 43 to open/close the delivery oil passage 40 of an oil pump 8 and a drain oil passage 41. Signals are inputted from an ignition switch 44 and an engine speed sensor 45 into a control device 43 and when ignition is ON with the engine speed being below a defined engine speed (e.g., 400rpm) at the time of cranking, an ON signal is outputted to the valve 42. As a result, the valve 42 opens up the oil passages 40, 41 to drain the delivered oil pressure of the oil pump 8 as it is, causing the oil pump 8 to be virtually in an idly rotating condition greatly lowering rotation resistance. Therefore, the dragging torque of the pump 8 is lowered improving the starting property of the engine.
