The process and the device according to the invention concern a hinge for seats having a back and seat cushion hinged in relation to each other and allowing the slope of the back to be adjusted and then the hinge to be locked in the desired position. It comprises two cheeks 1, 5 hinged to each other around an axis X1-X1. Locking pieces 10, 11 are operated by a cam 21 in such a way as to lock the hinge by engaging two sets of teeth 10a, 11a with a toothed crown 17, or, on the contrary, to release it. Elastic means such as 15, 16, 24, 25 ensure that the clearances are taken up, prevent wear and the breakage of teeth and allow automatic return to the locked position. <IMAGE>
