PURPOSE:An alkyl methacrylate copolymer, consisting of a copolymer of a fluoroalkyl methacrylate monomer with acrylic acid, having a Tg value and refractive index satisfying specific formulas, and suitable for the sheath component in optical transmitting fibers having improved adhesive property and heat resistance. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer for optical fibers, having a glass transition point (Tg) and refractive index (n<20>) satisfying formulas I and II [Tg is the glass transition point ( deg.K) of the aimed copolymer; n<20> is the refractive index of the aimed copolymer], and consisting of a copolymer of (A) a fluoroalkyl methacrylate momomer, e.g. 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl methacrylate, with (B) acrylic acid. The amount of the component (B) is preferably 0.5-10wt% based on the component (A). |
