PURPOSE: To efficiently reduce NOx by bringing exhaust gases into contact with a reducing agent in the presence of a catalyst contg. >=65 wt.% carbon and 0.1 to 10 wt.% metal oxide of Co, Fe, Ni, Cr or the like. CONSTITUTION: The catalyst for purification of the exhaust gases is formed by incorporating 0.1 to 10 wt.% sparingly soluble oxide of one or more metal selected from the group consisting of Co, Fe, Ni, Cr, V, Mo, W, Cu, Mn and Ti and 0.5 to 5 wt.% nitrogen into >=65 wt.% carbon. The exhaust gases are reacted with the reducing agent in the presence of the catalyst described above to reduce the NOx included in the exhaust gases. The reducing agent is adequately carbon monoxide, ammonia or the like and the molar ratio of the NOx to the reducing agent is adequately 0.3 to 1.5. The capacitance rate of the reaction described above is adequately 500 to 10,000 h<-1> . |
