This invention relates to a hollow fiber membrane (1, 11) used for an artificial kidney, an artificial lung or a blood plasma separating membrane. It has a hollow portion (2) extending continuously in a longitudinal direction and a fluid flows through the inside and/or the outside of the hollow portion (2). Projections (4, 8, 13a, 13b) are formed on the inner wall surface and/or the outer wall surface of the hollow portion (2) so as to generate a turbulent flow in the fluid. Accordingly, the fluid flows in a turbulent flow state inside and/or outside the hollow portion so that the flow rate of the fluid coming into contact with the wall surface increases remarkably. When this membrane is used for an artificial kidney, the efficiency of dialysis can be improved and when used for an artificial lung, gas exchange capability can be improved. Furthermore, the strength of the hollow fiber membrane itself can be improved and the membrane will not be crushed by the adjacent membranes. |
