The boiler for heating water works with fuel, preferably oil or gas, and has in a combustion chamber (2) a double-walled heat-exchange wall (3) in the form of a spiral, through which water flows in its spiral passage (4) and around which the flue gas flows in countercurrent between its spiral passage. The water inlet (7) is located at the outer spiral end and the water outlet (8) at the inner spiral end of the heat-exchange wall (3), and a waste gas pipe (9) for the flue gases flowing from the inside outwards is arranged at the outer spiral end. Provided in the flue gas spiral passage (11) are a plurality of baffles (12) in the form of baffle plates, which direct the flue gases over the entire length of the heat-exchange wall (3) seen in the spiral axial direction, and in the waste gas pipe (9) there is arranged a nozzle (13) which introduces, in atomised fashion, counter to the flue gas discharge direction (A), water which is enriched with sodium hydroxide solution or the like. By means of the baffles (12), the flue gases flow over the heat-exchange pipe (3) for optimal heat utilisation and transmission, and the water containing sodium hydroxide solution which is introduced into the waste pipe (9) as a mist brings about optimal cleaning of the flue gases with regard to their sulphur content and soot particles. <IMAGE>
