<p>A vacuum cleaner (10) is provided for use with an improved adaptor (88) for associating auxiliary cleaning attachments with the cleaner (10). Insertion of the improved adaptor (88) into an auxiliary suction port (20) may actuate various mechanisms internal to vacuum cleaner (10). Such mechanisms include a pivoting lift bar (76) on a lower side (14) of the vacuum cleaner chassis (12), for lifting main vacuum nozzle (72) and disengaging a rotating beater bar brush (74) from a floor (84) while the vacuum cleaner (10) performs auxiliary attachment cleaning. A pivoting diverter door (44) may be actuated upon insertion of the improved adaptor (88) into the port (20), for diverting suction from nozzle (72) through adaptor (88) and into an auxiliary cleaning attachment such as a hose (94). The adaptor (88) includes various camming structures (104, 106) for performing such actuations upon insertion and rotation of adaptor (88) in port (20). Engagement surfaces (102) and guide elements (100) of both the adaptor (88) and vacuum cleaner (10) facilitate axial rotation and securement of the adaptor (88) in the port (20).</p> |
