Adjustable, hydraulic vibration damper with a cylinder containing damping fluid, a piston rod immersing therein forming a seal and arranged so that it is axially displaceable and a piston fixed thereto, which divides the cylinder into two working chambers, and a damping device, at least one flow connection generating a damping force being provided, the effective cross-section of which is adjustable by means of a valve, the valve interacting with a tightly clamped diaphragm and a control chamber being formed on one side of the diaphragm which by way of a control bypass is subjected to the pressure present on the flow connection. A passage, which can be shut off by a control element, is arranged from the control chamber to the outlet bore of the flow connection, the passage being controllable by an axially movable valve body of the control element.
