PURPOSE:To obtain BN coated SiC whiskers easily mixable with a matrix and not reacting with the matrix by allowing the surfaces of SiC whiskers to react with gaseous NH3 and BCl3 in an atmosphere at a specified temp. and pressure. CONSTITUTION:The surfaces of SiC whiskers are allowed to react with gaseous NH3 and BCl3 by contact in an atmosphere at 1,300-1,900 deg.C in a furnace under 0.5-60Torr internal pressure. By the reaction, the surfaces of the whiskers are coated with BN and the thickness of the resulting BN coats is regulated to about 0.05-0.5mum. The coated whiskers can easily be mixed with a matrix and hardly react with the matrix. When the whiskers are added, a ceramic composite material having superior bending strength and fracture toughness can be provided. |
