In order to reduce the emission of noxious substances during the operation of an atmospheric burner which is to be operated with a high primary-air ratio, the burnable gas is set into at least one directed flow jet on its way to the combustion space (5) and, for the purpose of mixing with the combustion air in this jet, is guided over a distance through a space (7) fed with combustion air into the combustion space (5).
