Catalyst contains three components: (1) a cpd. of a transi-tion metal of a periodic group IVB (esp. Ti, Zr or Hf); (2) an aluminoxane of formula Me2Al-(O-AlMe)m-OAlMe2 (I) or (II) (where m is greater than 2) derived from trimethylaluminium; and (3) an aluminoxane contg. at least one hydrocarbyl group other than n-alkyl bound to the Al atoms (pref. branched alkyl, cyclohexyl or aryl). Component (1) is pref. present at 10 power (-8) to 10 power (-2) moles/litre; component (2) at an Al concn. of 3mM/litre; component (3) at an Al concn. of 20-95% compared to (2).
