PURPOSE:To produce high-purity acid anhydride under mild conditions at <=normal temperature in good reproducibility and in high purity, by condensing a carboxylic acid with a carbodiimide condensation agent in a nonpolar solvent, carrying out the reaction in the presence of a pyridine derivative. CONSTITUTION:In condensing a carboxylic acid (e.g., myristic acid or p- vinylphenylhexanoic acid) shown by the formula RCOOH (R is 9-21C hydrocar bon or hydrocarbon derivative group thereof) by using a carbodiimide condensa tion agent (e.g., N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide) in a nonpolar solvent such as chloroform, benzene or methylene chloride, a pyridine derivative (e.g., pyridine or N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine) is added to the reaction mixture to give an acid anhydride (e.g., stearic anhydride) shown by the formula (RCO)2O. This compound is useful as an intermediate for preformed chemical mediator or a raw material for emulsifying agent, surfactant, etc. This method is effective for formation of carboxylic acid anhydride containing double or triple bond, ketone, OH, etc., in the molecule. |
