<p>A card reader (2) for reading e.g. a "smart card" (1) having contact pads (7a,7b) thereon which are connected to an information store such as an integrated circuit. The card reader includes an enclosed sliding carriage (4) with wedge-shaped cams (9a,9b) that urge leaf contacts (6a,6b) into engagement with the contact pads (7a,7b) on the card (2) when it is inserted into the card reader. A microswitch, operated by the card, supplies power to circuitry for enabling the card to be read. The card reader can be made very slim, e.g. 5mm. Also, since the leaf contacts do not engage the card except when the card is fully inserted there is no wear on the card or the leaf contacts during insertion or withdrawal.</p> |
