Non-metallic material (with a high specific resistance to impact or to destratification) is based on several layers of an interlaced mixt. of fibres of glass (as a mesh or mat) and of Nylon, pref. having a lower unit wt. than the glass fibres, all impregnated with a binder resin, pref. polyester, an epoxy or a rubberised phenolic resin. The ratio of glass:Nylon fibres is pref. 90:10-10:90. The composite layer is pref. covered with a material of Rockwell hardness >= C-50 and compressive strength >=7.030 kg./cm2, e.g., glass, Al, B or Si carbide etc. Material is esp. suitable for armour against small high velocity or fragmentary missiles. The specific toughness of the structure compares favourably with structures based on use of polyamide or glass fibres alone, or with Al, steel or Ti alloys, thus allowing approx. 10-25%wt. saving for a given degree of protection.
|
