The machine comprises a hammer mechanism 44 intended to generate impact by means of a reciprocating movement and to transmit these to a tool 18 received in a spindle 12 mounted rotationally in the body 10 and capable of moving axially. It further includes drive means comprising a first and second independent drive assembly, the first assembly M1, 30, 34 being intended for rotationally driving the spindle 12 and the second M2, 56, 58 for driving the hammer mechanism 44. A first and a second switching member 68, 70 are respectively associated with the said first and second drive assemblies in order either to allow operation of the first and second drive assemblies simultaneously, or operation of one of the assemblies separately depending on whether the machine is being used as a hammer drill, as a simple drill or as a hammer. <IMAGE>
