The invention relates to a reel with folding flanges, of the type used for transporting semi-rigid plastic pipes, made of polyethylene, for laying in a trench. Its purpose is to allow the return loading, without requiring special exceptional-transport authorisation, of three empty reels which are folded up so as to remain below the height limit of 4 m above the ground. It is characterised in that a segment 5', forming a half-moon, of each circular lateral flange 5 can be folded outwards by means of at least two hinges 9 rigidly attached to two juxtaposed irons 10-10' which are parallel to one of the diameters of the flanges of the reel and are arranged above the central axis 12 of the flange, and in that the bars 4 for winding up the pipes, located above the central axis 12 of the flanges, can be removed.
