The detector of the invention comprises two receivers: one 6 receiving the light back-scattered by the atmosphere during illumination by the lamp 1, the other 9 receiving a fraction of the light of the lamp. The signal leaving the main receiver 6 is applied to the input of an analogue-digital converter, whose reference voltage is provided by the output signal of the receiver 9. The resulting calibrated signal, which is independent of lighting power variations of the lamp 1, is interpreted by a device 12, either as a monitoring signal or as data for caclulating a visibility distance. <IMAGE>
