Apparatus for treating water

In a process for treating water or purifying wastewater, especially for its final purification, in which water is passed through filters from bottom to top and the filters are washed in the opposite direction from top to bottom, the muddy wash water produced from the filters is conducted into a washwater disposal vessel, the sludge is separated there from the washwater preferably by sedimentation and the washwater is then fed by compressed air to all filter vessels on the raw water side in proportion to the throughput and the thickened sludge is taken off discontinuously from the washwater disposal vessel. It is thus possible, with a minimum of expense, to carry out differing process steps of a mechanical/flocculating type and/or adsorptive type, biological-aerobic type or biological-anaerobic type.
