The oscillating movements of the loose gears of a manual shift transmission, which cause an unpleasant rustling noise are damped by annular segments, which are fixed in the oil-filled transmission housing and surround the loose gears with a narrow radial gap. The annular segments are formed on coil shells, which are fixed on the inside wall of the housing. When an electrical current is applied, the coil windings situated in the coil shells give rise to eddy currents in the loose gears made of steel and produce an eddy current damping in addition to the hydraulic damping.
