A vehicle with an engine and a hydrostatic transmission comprising adjustable hydraulic machines has a control device which has a brake command transmitter 1, an electronic component 2, a speed sensor 5, an overspeed limit sensor 6, a logic element 8, an overspeed governor 7 and an output stage 3. Under certain conditions the control device causes braking of the vehicle. In order to permit braking as a function of the load, it is proposed that the overspeed governor 7 be operationally connected directly to the electronic component 2, the overspeed governor 7 controllably influencing the rate of adjustment of the hydraulic machines as a function of the speed of the engine detected by the speed sensor 5. <IMAGE>
