The invention relates to a device for holding books with a supporting element for the books. In this device, the intention is to enable the books to be provided conveniently with a pressmark in the vertical position and to be read without any difficulties in the bookcase in the horizontal position. According to the invention, the supporting element (2) can be fitted to the holding member (4) and in the horizontal position is provided with a supporting surface onto which the books can be laid.
