PURPOSE:To establish a highly efficient Q-switched optical fiber laser by providing two single mode optical fibers, which are halved vertically with respect to a center axis, and whose two edge faces are spaced away by a predetermined distance parallelly, and periodically changing optical coupling efficiency between the two optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:A single mode optical fiber 1, which constitute a resonator, is halved vertically with respect to a center axis thereof. Facing two edge faces of the optical fiber 1 are spaced away by a predetermined distance parallelly. Optical coupling between the halved optical fibers 1 is made maximum. In addition, optical coupling efficiency between the halved optical fibers 1 is periodically changed by an optical fiber drive device 10. Hereby, an optical coupling part between the two edge faces is operative as an optical modulator of low insertion loss. This assures reduced optical loss in the resonator, resulting in a reduced oscillation threshold of an excitation light source and hence a highly efficient Q-switched optical fiber laser. |
