A method of making a hollow cylindrical container body open at one end and closed at the other, including the steps of blanking a circular preform from thin sheet metal precoated on the major surfaces thereof, the preform having a diameter about twice the ultimate diameter of the container body, and thereafter subjecting the preform to a plurality of forming operations each involving concurrent drawing and ironing of the metal, said operations comprising (A) drawing the preform and immediately ironing the drawn material to form a shallow cup having a diameter approximately twice its height, (B) advancing the cup on a redraw punch into a combined redrawing and reironing die.
