PURPOSE:To produce the title compound useful for organic synthetic raw materials, etc., in high yield and selectivity, by dimerizing an alicyclic ketone having at least one H on the alpha-carbon atom. through dehydrating condensation using oxide or hydroxide of zirconium as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An alicyclic ketone (e.g., cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, methylcyclohexanone or cyclooctanone) having at least one hydrogen atom. at the alpha-carbon atom. is dimerized by dehydrating condensation reaction (preferably in the liquid phase) in the presence of a catalyst of oxide or hydroxide of zirconium (the oxide thereof may be a hydrous oxide) to afford the aimed unsaturated alicyclic ketone [e.g., 2-(1-cyclohexenyl)cyclohexanone]. Separation of the reactants or product from the catalyst is readily carried out according to this method. The product is useful also as a synthetic intermediate for insecticides, etc. |
