Terephthalic acid diamide of formula (III) is prepared by (a) alkali- hydrolyzing the ester of terephthalic acid or the polymer thereof to produce terephthalic acid metalic salts of formula (I), (b) reacting the said salts with the halogenated ammonium of formula NH4X to produce ammonium salts of terephthalic acid, and then (c) dihydrating the produced ammonium salts of terephthalic acid. In formulas, M is alkali metal, X is halogen.
