PURPOSE:To obtain the title material capable of giving a product having improved strength (e.g. fracture toughness) from base silicon carbide (powder or fiber) by transforming a part of silicon carbide in the silicon carbide powder or silicon carbide fiber having a specified purity to silicon nitride and carbon by partial decomposition. CONSTITUTION:An aimed material is obtd. by transforming a part of silicon carbide in silicon carbide powder or silicon carbide fiber having >=50wt.% purity to silicon nitride and carbon by partial decomposition. Since, by this process, formed silicon nitride and carbon are included in the inside of the silicon carbide powder or silicon carbide fiber, the powder or the fiber is compounded with finely dispersed silicon nitride and carbon. Moreover, the silicon carbide powder or silicon carbide fiber as a base material is strengthened more effectively. A multi-element material of silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and carbon is produced in large amt. inexpensively. |
