PURPOSE:To provide the title member which can exhibit excellent cutting performance over a long period of time in wet process high-speed cutting of cast iron, etc., by forming a hard coating layer consisting of the carbide, nitride, carbonitride or carbonitrooxide of Ti on the surface of a ceramics base body having a specific compsn. CONSTITUTION:The ceramics base body having the compsn. contg., by weight %, of 9-45% Al2O3, and 0.5-8% >=1 kinds among the oxides of Mg, Y and Zr and consisting of the balance 51-90% titanium carbide and unavoidable impurities is prepd. The hard coating layer consisting of single layer of one kind of plural layers of >=2 kinds among the carbide, nitride, carbonitride, and carbonitrooxide is formed to 0.5-20mum average layer thickness by a chemical vapor deposition method, etc., on the surface of such base body, by which the surface-coated ceramics member for cutting tools is produced. Heat resistance is improved by further providing the hard coating layer consisting of the oxide of Al or Zr thereon. |
