Identification system for farm livestock e.g. pigs - uses subcutaneous electronic circuits to keep track of animals during breeding, rearing and transportation

The system consists of a central detecting and recording station and electronic capsules which are hypodermically injected into each animal. Each electronic capsule contains a passive responder chip. When the animal comes within range of the detector, the responder provides data about the animal including a unique identification number. When a number of animals is taken to market or to an abattoir in several vehicles, the system can be used to sort them into appropriate groups for further processing. The data may also be communicated to a home base via a telephone modem link. Alternative capsules may be used which contain active transmitters in place of the passive responders.
