PURPOSE:To attain high speed response and bistable operation with a large-area element by laminating films having good uniformity on a substrate and forming uniform ruggedness thereto. CONSTITUTION:A mixture composed of polyamide and the org. material expressed by the constitutional formula of the formula I is developed on a water surface and the org. film 3 consisting thereof is stuck onto the substrate 2, by which the homogeneous thin org. film 3 is formed on the substrate 2. This LB (Langmuir-Brodgett) film 3 can be laminated in any layers so that the thickness of the films on the substrate 2 can be changed as desired. The ruggedness having uniaxiality can be formed on the substrate 2 surface by patterning the LB films 3 on the substrate to, for example, a stripe shape. A liquid crystal element is formed by using such substrate. Since this element is formed with the uniform ruggedness on the substrate surface, the ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules are oriented. The optical responsiveness of the element is thereby improved and the dealing with the increase in the area is facilitated. |
