Variable setting plane for hydrofoil - with elastic mounting for self regulating setting on fixed support strut

The profiled hydrofoil support plane is mounted at the bottom of a support strut to pivot about a transverse, horizontal axis. The pivot axis is near the nose of the profile and at a set distance from the centre of action of the upthrust force. The plane is elastically mounted to the strut with the spring attached away from the pivot axis to pull the plane into a steep setting. As the plane is dragged through the water the drag causes the plane to assume a more horizontal setting, with the upthrust automatically adjusted. Sudden water flow changes are thus dampened out without undue vibrations transmitted to the hull.
