In a shock absorber for mounting between the chassis and the bumper of a vehicle, the shock is transmitted through a movable device which slides through an opening into an elongated housing and is opposed by a thrust deviced fixed in the housing. Fixed and movable elements are attached to the housing and the movable device, presenting surfaces with a significant mutual coefft. of friction in extended transverse contact through interlocking. The movable device is attached to the movable elements so that as soon as it moves into the housing the thrust device causes the frictional elements to move relatively. The indentations may be tooth-like corrugations with inclined sides formed in a transverse wheel rim(arc). The fixed elements may be of polyacetal and the movable elements of poly(phenylene oxide). The device is capable of resisting collisions at up to 8 km/hr. and the friction elements allow high initial energy absorption decreasing to a uniform level.
|
