The sewing machine control and regulating unit incorporates a first switch for rotation control by means of a rotation command signal, a device for the determining of rotation conditions that are dangerous to the machine operator and a device for the blocking of the rotation command signal in response to the detector, which detects the lifting of the fabric presser part as well as the operation of a pedal switch. The detector features a proximity switch in the neightbourhood of the sewing machine needle.
